Description

Join the Clarion West Six-Week Workshop staff for a two-part class designed to develop your workshopping skills. Across two days, you’ll explore several workshopping models used by the Clarion West Workshop, each designed to empower authors by centering their creative intent and fostering an inclusive, constructive feedback culture.

Day One (required to attend Day 2) introduces foundational approaches for building a supportive workshop environment. You’ll learn how to set community agreements and create a space that centers the voice and intent of authors, using models based on Fonda Lee, S.L. Huang, and Liz Lerman’s critique methods, author interview-based approaches to critique, and a modified version of the Milford method to guide feedback.

Day Two (optional, but encouraged!) offers hands-on practice in small groups, allowing you to experience these models firsthand. Volunteers will have the chance to receive feedback, gaining insights into the unique strengths each model brings.

This class is ideal for writing teachers, those establishing or refining a writers’ group, and anyone interested in advancing their workshopping expertise.

Although the focus will be on speculative fiction work, these methods can be used for all genres.

Attendees will be asked to participate via chat, voice, and/or video. To participate in the Day 2 workshopping practice, you must attend Day 1.

Recording Policy: Day 1 will be recorded for attendees and provided 3-5 days after class. Day 2 will not be recorded for privacy. We will not be able to provide a recording between Day 1 and 2.

Meeting Dates:

November 14-15, 4pm-5:30pm

Advance Readings: Participants will be provided with a link to a packet of materials after registration.
